Former US President George H W Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Sunday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood, according to family spokesperson Jim McGrath.
Mr McGrath stated in tweet on Monday that Mr Bush, 93, is “responding to treatments and appears to be recovering.”
This admission was just a day after the funeral of his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, who died at home in Houston on 17 April aged 92. The funeral on Saturday was attended by her husband, her son and former President George W Bush, as well as former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and current first lady Melania Trump.
Mr Bush’s health has declined in recent years, including a diagnosis of vascular Parkinson’s disease that has left him wheelchair-bound, and reportedly suffers from ongoing respiratory problems.
Mr Bush served as President from 1989 to 1993, before which he served as a Congressman and CIA Director, and was Ronald Reagan’s Vice-President. He was born in Massachusetts in 1924, and is the oldest of the five living former Presidents.
