Comedian and the Daily Show contributor Michelle Wolf delivered a critical speech at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday evening, which took aim at key White House figures and the media.

No attendee or non-attendee was safe from Ms Wolf’s grilling jokes at the annual event, where an assortment of politicians, journalists and power players were present.

Ms Wolf’s rising popularity as a comedian has been fuelled as she spent 19 minutes making blunt jabs at people such as Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, President Donald Trump, Democrats, Republicans, Hilary Clinton and the media.

Ms Wolf began her speech with a direct dig at Mr Trump saying, “Like a porn star says when she’s about to have sex with a Trump, ‘Let’s get this over with'”.

On Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who remained noticeably stoic, Ms Wolf joked, “Sarah Sanders burns facts and then uses them to create the perfect smokey eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.” Wolf also joked about Ivanka Trump: “She’s about as helpful to women as an empty box of tampons”.

On US media, Ms Wolf said of CNN, “You guys love breaking news and, congrats guys, you broke it”. And on Fox News she said, “Fox News is here. So, you know what that means, ladies: cover your drinks. Seriously.”

The event which celebrates the ‘freedom of the media’ was turned on its head as Ms Wolf took direct aim at news outlets.

“You pretend that you hate him but I think you love him,” she said. “I think what no one in this room wants to admit, is that Trump has helped all of you. You helped create this monster and now you’re profiting off of him.”

The speech has received considerable criticism and backlash.

Former chief of staff Reince Priebus tweeted:

However, others have praised Ms Wolf’s severe criticism, with The Washington Post saying the comedian “got it just right” and CNN declaring that “Michelle Wolf was the big winner of the WHCD, not Trump.”
